Asahidake

CENTRAL HOKKAIDO

The Powder Belt of Central Hokkaido is one of our favourite areas and the birthplace of Whiteroom. It has everything you want in a Japow holiday – fun resorts and epic backcountry loaded with untracked powder, no crowds and a true cultural experience.

We recommend that you use Furano as a base to explore the area as all the best stuff can be easily accessed from there in under 1.5hrs. Furano has everything you could want in a sleepy Japanese ski town – a great range of accommodation options, bar and restaurants to keep you fed and watered and a cool small-town vibe. If you want to mix it up and stay somewhere else Asahidake or Tokachidake would be our pick. You can get there from Furano easily but it’s pretty amazing staying up in those zones and being the first one on the lift or hiking on the skins track to the goods.

Whatever you do you’ll make the most of this area by choosing one or two bases and having a flexible itinerary.

NISEKO, OTARU & SOUTHERN HOKKAIDO AREAS

Niseko is the powder and apreś capital of Japan. One of its blessings is you can be pretty much guaranteed reliable, day after day powder skiing and riding through birch forests, big vertical and some wide-open alpine. Niseko is world-renowned for good reason; it snows. Lots.

It’s a great place to use as a base if you want luxury accommodation with all the apreś ski trimmings. From Niseko, you can explore the 4 interconnected mountains of Niseko United or head to a surrounding resorts such Moiwa, Rusutsu, Kiroro, Kokusai, Teine or backcountry zones like Goshiki Onsen and Yoichi-dake, as well as climbing iconic peaks like Mt Yotei and it’s sister mountain Shirebetsu-daki.

If you want to experience a more traditional Japanese town we highly recommend adding on 2-3 nights in the coastal city of Otaru. Home to some of the best sushi and a short drive to Kiroro, Kokusai, Teine, Asahri, Tengiyama and some secret backcountry zones it’s a great place to wander the historic streets and immerse yourself in the Japanese culture.

TOHOKU PRIVATE TOURS

The Tohoku region in northern Honshu is one of the last frontiers of Japan snow tourism. With almost limitless backcountry terrain and very few foreigners, you will be blown away with the untouched lines you will get to enjoy from start to end.

As this area is one of our remote bases your guide stays with you and looks after you both during the day and at night, ensuring you have the best time both on the snow and out on the town. We recommend a road trip style itinerary running from south to north, starting in Morioka and finishing in Hakkoda and bookended by Shinkansen trains from Tokyo.

Morioka is a huge city which we recommend you stay in the centre of to truly experience all that it can offer. From there you can access Getto Kogen, Tazawako, Shzukuishi, Appi Kogen and Hachimantai as well as a few smaller ski areas. If you want to break it up or have a more traditional style of accommodation experience you can stay in Semi Onsen for a few nights. Next stop is Hakkoda and Aomori Ski areas (although there are some other ski areas along the way…shh! Hakkoda has some of the most expansive backcountry terrain in Tohoku as well as the famous snow monsters. However, being a volcanic pimple in a vast flat plain means the weather can smash the mountain and force you to ski elsewhere. For this reason, we recommend you stay in Aomori city or Kuroishi onsen village.

Tohoku is truely for those keen to enjoy a real Japan adventure complete with no crowds, few foreigners, loads of pow, amazing food and unique experiences.
